My Top 5 Tips on What to Wear to Your Personal Branding Shoot
This is a BIG stumbling block for many and is what I get asked the most - What should I wear? I know the story (I’ve been in your shoes multiple times!), you book in your shoot then PANIC, what the heck am I going to wear?! It’s really hard not to feel a little stressed about this, so let me ease that stress by sharing my top tips for choosing your outfits.
My Top 5 Tips for what to wear to your Personal Branding Shoot
1. Consider your branding colour palette
You don’t necessarily have to wear your actual branding colours, however it’s important that the colours you wear work in tonally and don’t clash with them. Think of it this way, if your website has a soft and dreamy pastel colour palette, and you go and pop a photo of yourself in bright cobalt blue on there, it’s just not gonna look great to the eye!
2. Feeling comfortable and confident is key
Confidence shines when you’re feeling at ease, so select outfits that you feel amazing in and you’ll get the best outcome from your shoot. Because if you’re worrying about how you look, or about your straps falling down or your bra showing, your discomfort will show through in your images. If you’re shopping for new outfits, make sure you have trialled them at home first and don’t choose the day of the shoot to be the first time you wear them (I’ve made that mistake before!).
3. Bring a selection of outfits
Make the most of your shoot time, and extend the longevity of your content by mixing it up with multiple outfits. It’s a great way to keep your marketing material fresh - like you’ve had several shoots not just the one! The type of outfits you choose will depend on your business and brand but it’s good to change it up with a mix of casual, something more formal or professional and, if relevant something unique to your business, e.g an apron if you’re a nutritionist wanting photos prepping food, workout gear if you’re a yoga instructor etc. 3-4 outfits for a 2 hour shoot is a good number to aim for. And remember you want to show personality - boring corporate headshots are not the way to go anymore!
4. Avoid logos and distracting prints
Anything that detracts from you is best to steer clear of! Prints and patterns are fine and can add personality, but keep them simple - nothing too big, bold or in your face that will be distracting for your audience. Logos and wording is only going to draw the viewers eye away from you so keep it clean and distraction free.
5. Preparation is key
Prepping your outfits before your shoot so that you head into it with confidence will make a huge difference. Try on your options and take a photo on your phone to see how it translates on screen as some things work better in real life. Oh and don’t forget to get the iron out - we don’t want crumpled clothes in your photos!
